The untold story of Mongolia

This is a story from way back in Mongolia that affected us quite a bit. Even with our  "24 hour rule" (everything is funny after 24 hours) we had to let this one brew a little while before it became funny. So here it is as an excerpt from my journal:

...we took off to Zunmod to walk back to UB via the park containing Mandshir Khiid where we started our hike. The hike we did, using the GPS but without the proper coordinates. Needless to say we got lost. The terrain was spectacular throughout but near the end we ran into a barbwire fence. As it turns out that is the edge of the presidents yard. We tracked along the fence over a ridge and down into another valley. Thinking we would be OK we re-descended to find the same fence. So we continued along the fence until it ended. It wasn't supposed to end, which we find out later. We descended into the valley to a road. The nicest road we had seen yet in Mongolia. Because it is the f?*&ing (censored from the journal) presidents driveway. By this point in the hike my sweet army pants were ripped from c*&k to crack and I'm strolling down the driveway to the Mongolian "White House," c*&k out! I put my spare shirt around my waist to put "the beast" away and moments later we are met by an AK-47 wielding Mongolian army guy. He guided us to the entrance where we had to explain what the f*&k we were doing there. Méliane was in a panic and I wasn't much better. We were forced to call Buma (note: our friend from the train from Zaminuud to UB the first day in Mongolia, this was also after we had tried to explain to the military guys personally why we were there when it finally dawned on us that we knew someone who could translate for us). F*&cking savior. He came down to translate for us. We were supposed to leave our passports and pick them up the following day at the Army central office, but we had tickets to Khovd the next day. He managed to convince them that he would go in our place so that we could keep on travels. I'll say it again: F*&king savior! The whole ordeal took 4 hours, plus the 8 it took to hike including the fact that we were out of food and water. Buma took us home and we copied our plane tickets for proof and he left...
..but the 29th was in my top 3 worst days of my life.
